Ballot Theft: Burglary Murder and Coverup is the third film in my series about the Kansas City Mafia. In it, I examine the mafia’s influence on Kansas City’s local politics. An early Mob boss named Johnny Lazia partnered with Boss Tom Pendergast to create a coalition that dominated Kansas City’s municipal government from the 1920s to the 1950s. At the end of World War II, Missourian Harry Truman became the President of the United States after Franklin Delano Roosevelt died in office. President Truman got his start in politics with the Pendergast organization. When President Truman had a problem with the Missouri Democratic 5th District Congressman, Roger Slaughter, he called on Jim Pendergast to ensure that Slaughter was beaten in the next primary election. Pendergast enlisted his mafia friends in this effort and the Pendergast backed candidate beat Slaughter. This film uses Kansas City Mafia experts like William Ouseley, Open City and Mobsters in Our Midst, Frank Hayde, The Mob and the Machine, Mafia Dreams, and Pat Fasl, John the Yegg, The Police and the Syndicate to tell its story.
